Acme Coalition vs. Media Literacy
I think http://www.acmecoalition.org/ is a better source of information on media than
http://www1.medialiteracy.com/home.jsp. One of the reasons is because the site overall seems more organized and contains a lot more of information
The story behind ACME is very convincing. They include how it is a coalition -an "organization of organizations" - who include a large variety of different groups of people, such as students, educators, parents, media makers, public health advocates, and citizen activists to talk about and try and solve the problems thats caused by media. They will try to find a way and persuade young and old individuals to make media lead to healthier way of life.
Also, the way they use words throughout their page really causes the reader to see that this coalition is serious about what they are doing. Their use of words are very strong and keeps you interested through what you are reading.
ACME is goverened and controlled by a Board of Directors and is suppourted by an Advisory Board. The people included in these groups are dedicated to the ACME group and strive to bring turn our society into a better place with a healthier media. These idividuals are very experienced with media literacy, they have knowledge and production experience with possess strong leadership, and organizational, networking and fundraising skills. They also try and have a culturaly diverse group of people included in ACME.
This site has a wide variety of members included in the group. They contain people of all ages, gender, and ethnicity. Also, anybod is welcome to join ACME if they really want to. You are also able to join even if you aren't an activist.
ACME's very own Dr. Suht Jhaly received their first "Media Education/Activist" Award which was presented at the 2004 ACME National Summit.
The coalition's mission, as they state, is to "develop, distribute and promote media literacy curricula " which will help people express themselves freely, study the media, and cause them to be more active and included in better media. They also want to push and reccommend people to be more included in independent media-making. Acme is also trying to help the nation, local, and world wide media change.
Action Coalition for Media Literacy is suppourted and still alive due to member dues, donations from people, and grants given to them. Most of their work is voluntary and does not contain too much money. They also do not receive any money from big corporate companies. I think by not receiving money from companies, it shows that they are really seirous about what they are doing. It shows they want to do it to change the media and not doing it for money.
The ACME site consists many links to educate people who are interested in changing and studying media. They include alot of facts to help persuade people interested. On one link, you can find lesson plans, study guides, videos, handouts, and alot of other Adobe Reader files which people all over the world can print from their home computer for free. Also, if people want to find out more information about the organization, they have a series of questions with alot of information.
